Cheese Dishes
Special containers for serving Stilton cheese were
made from the beginning of the 19th century. Wedgewood
was the first to produce a tall cylindrical cover
with matching base plate as early as 1800 and offered
three of these specialist dishes.
It was obviously desirable that Stilton should be kept covered not only to restrict drying but also to prevent the strong smell of the ripe cheese permeating the room.
The base plates of these dishes were made large enough to take the whole circumference of the cheese with the dome or cover tall enough to accommodate either the whole or fractions of the whole cheese.
