A Roman Cheese Dish Found
A long standing interest in archaeology and continued investigation of several known Roman sites in Stilton led Richard Landy to discover, in March 2006, a 3rd Century ceramic cheese mould - the only complete example ever discovered from Roman Britain.
The discovery means that Stilton does have its own cheese-making history stretching back as far as 1,800 years! But this Stilton cheese press is just one of hundreds of finds Richard has discovered in Stilton sites - Samian, mica dusted ware, Nene Valley ware, local coarse wares through to medieval green glazed ware and other objects.
Peterborough Council Archaeologist Ben Robinson described the find as "utterly fantastic". No wonder the Time Team couldn't resist a visit.
